Other Books featuring Sophie

Sophie has also featured in several other books. Some of these, such as "Mario Testino Portraits" or "Makeup Your Mind", feature pictures that are not exclusive and the pictures are perhaps easier to get elsewhere. The batch shown here and on the next page are a selection of books that feature Sophie in some form. Please note that in all cases, the publishing dates are believed to be correct. Unless otherwise stated, these are the UK release dates - export copies may have been released up to a month before or a month after. There must be more out there, I will keep my eyes open...

X-Ray
Thames & Hudson ISBN 0-500-54235-X (UK Copy)
Powerhouse ISBN 1576870634 (US Copy)
[Published on 4th October 1999 in the UK and 1st November 1999 in the US, the theme for this book is people photographed against white backgrounds. The Sophie picture dates from 1997. There is also a version which comes in a different cover, ISBN number 1576870367, published on 1st December 1999 - this is believed to be an American Version as the publishers are Powerhouse, and not Thames & Hudson.]

Juergen Teller Go Sees
Scalo ISBN 3908247144

[published on 1st September 1999, this is basically a big book full of full page photos of models. Nothing more, nothing less, but the theme linking each photo is that all are taken at the entrance to Teller's London apartment. This marvellous shot of Sophie was taken on October 20th 1998.]

Rankinworks
Booth-Clibborn Editions ISBN 1861541619

[Published on 1st December 2000, this book is the work of celebrity/fashion photographer Rankin, who photographed Sophie for the October 2002 issue of “Tatler” in the editorial “Frock Chicks”. This book features just one picture of Sophie, but it is a rarely seen photo – in fact, it is quite probably exclusive to this book.]

Unseen Vogue
Little Brown ISBN 0-316-86023-9
Little Brown ISBN 0-316-72766-0 [Paperback reissue, published on 29th October 2004]

[Originally published on 24th October 2002, this book features previously unpublished pictures from "Vogue" photoshoots. Sophie's photos date from a session published in November 2000, and the book includes 2 photos. One of the photos is partially obscured by text, although an 'un-obscured' version of the same picture is available in the March/April 2003 issue of "American Photo". The 2004 softback issue features a new cover, with a picture of Kate Moss.]

Dreaming In Print : A Decade Of Visionaire
Edition 7L ISBN 3-88243-819-3

[Published on 1st November 2002. Visionaire is a collectable fashion/art magazine from the US - each edition is issued in often elaborate packaging. Indeed, so collectable are they, that this book is cheaper than buying any of the back issues! Sophie has been included a couple of times, and this book is a "Best Of" of the first 40 issues. One Sophie picture from Visionaire 31 (February 2000) is included in this book. For the definitive article, the book also included a postcard insert with the book's coverstar, Angela Lindvall on one side.]

Fashion Now
Taschen ISBN 3-8228-2187-X
Taschen ISBN 3-8228-4075-0 [reissue]
[Published on 28th February 2003, and reissued with a new cover during June 2005, this book features articles about and interviews with the "150 Most Important Designers".
Sophie features in the section for Jeremy Scott, complete with a very rare picture of her on the catwalk. However, the book was produced in conjunction with "ID" magazine, and this picture was originally printed in the March 2002 issue of the mag - it may be worth trying to track that down instead as the original book carries a £20 price-tag, although the reissue sells for about £6-7.]

Shooting Stars
Metro ISBN 1843580969

[Published on 30th June 2004. Richard Young is a paparazzi photographer based in London who has built up an un-paparazzi like reputation over the years. He is respected by celebrities and is not the sort to get into fights unlike other ‘paps’. This book, released in conjunction with an exhibition of his work in London, contains a selection of pictures over 30 years from numerous events. Sophie gets a look in – the book contains a picture of her at the Vogue/Laureus fashion party at the Monte Carlo Sports Club in 2000. The picture from the book is owned by Rex Features – they have a website full of Sophie thumbnails at http://www.rexfeatures.com/cgi-bin/r2show0?k=sophie+dahl. You can’t click on the thumbnails unless you have a password (and you need to be part of a company to ask for one) but it might still be worth a look.]

4 Inches
Scriptum Editions ISBN 1902686519
[Published at the end of May 2005, this book was compiled with the help of Elton John, with some of the proceeds from the sale of this hardback going to his AIDS Foundation charity. A series of famous women posed nude but for a pair of shoes (hence the title), although most chose to hide their modesty rather than actually flash the flesh!

There is one picture of Sophie in the book, unlike her friend Laura Bailey who got two. The picture is technically exclusive, but had already been published several months before when Soph appeared on the cover of “Style” magazine. Original copies come shrinkwrapped, with a ‘4 Inches’ sticker attached to the front.]

A.L.T. 365+
Powerhouse ISBN 1576872408
[Published during November 2004, this book’s title comes from the fact that the photos are taken during a year of following the travels of US Vogue’s editor Andre Leon Talley. The photos are of people he ‘encounters’ along the way, one of which is Sophie. The picture is exclusive to the book.]

Extreme Beauty
Yale University Press ISBN 0300-10312-3 (Paperback) & ISBN 0300-09117-6 (Hardback)

[Hardback published on December 1st 2001 - this book is split into various sections, each looking at fashion in relation to different parts of the body. There are two Sophie pix from her Jean Paul Gaultier catwalk appearance in January 2001 (one coming down the runway and one going back), and although the pictures are believed to have never been published in any other books, both photos have in the past been found more easily on the Firstview.com website. Paperback published in February 2004, although some websites claim UK copies published two months later.]

Calendario Pirelli Il Nuovo Millenio Volume 1
Rizzoli ISBN 1828-552X
[Published on 30th November 2006, this Italian only book features every Pirelli picture from the 2000 through to 2006 calendars - so it's one of several places to track down Sophie's photos from the 2003 calendar....]

Calendario Pirelli Gli Anni Novanta Volume 2
Rizzoli ISBN to be confirmed
[...whilst a week later, this follow up edition hit Italian bookshops. This one features all the Pirelli pics from the 1990's. Sophie appeared in 1999, click on "The Pirelli Calendar" page for more info.]

Cheap Date
Slab O Concrete ISBN 1 899866 26 4
[published on either 10th July 1999, or in early 2000 (confusion reigns about this), this is effectively a 'Best-Of' book compiling highlights from the first six issues of this magazine, information about which I have discussed in more detail elsewhere on this site. There is also 'new' material included as well. Sophie is one of the pin up girls who appear throughout the book - her picture is from the same photo session that spawned her appearance in the first issue of the mag in 1997. The photographer was Adrian Wilson, and three pictures from this session at one point could be found at http://www.adrianwilson.com/portfolio1/index.html - however, I think they have now disappeared. The photo below is a copyrighted web image of the actual page from the book:

I imagine the other two images are now impossible to find but try the link and wish for good luck...]
